I learned to bartend back in Pittsburgh PA. After studying Philosophy at Bucknell University I had two choices…hide from society by continuing on to advanced degrees, or get into the restaurant business. I chose the latter and actually took a course at the Pittsburgh Institute of Mixology where I was issued a stack of flash cards with hundreds of obscure recipes that I would never have to make in real time. In Pennsylvania, if you can open a bottle of wine, pour a draught beer, shake a martini, spice up a Bloody, and find the “T” on your bev-gun to squirt it over Gin you’ve just covered 99% of your daily mixing duties. I fine tuned my skills by entertaining friends & family over the years with alcohol alchemy. Once you start reading about the history of spirits and botanicals you’re hooked. Thank God for celibate Monks!
